Originally there was a bell tower on the west side, which collapsed or was demolished in the Middle Ages. On the south side, strong exterior retaining walls were built to secure the wall. The sacristy on the south side of the choir dates from the late Middle Ages. The church fell into disuse when the new church on the site was completed in 1871. The old church in Sakshaug was handed over to the Fortidsminneforeningen. In the 20th century, the restoration of the church began. The choir received a new roof in 1910 and the nave in 1926, and in 1931 the sacristy was restored. The church was reconsecrated in 1958.
