Dorpskerk Huizum
The Dorpskerk Huizum (12th cent.) is the oldest monument of the city of Leeuwarden, has a very valuable interior and is now used for concerts, exhibitions, lectures etc. The great building with old graveyard, bier house etc, was never visited so often as nowadays. Location: Huizum Dorp 67, a 15 minutes walk from the Central Station through a nice 'green blew' area along the beautiful river Potmarge. The old village of Huizum is now surrounded by the town but is still a lovely oasis in the city. See www.dorpskerkhuizum.nl.

The Dorpskerk Huizum (12th cent.) is the oldest monument of the city of Leeuwarden, has a very valuable interior and is now used for concerts, exhibitions, lectures etc. The great building with old graveyard, bier house etc. was never visited so often as nowadays. Location: Huizum Dorp 67, a 15 minutes walk from the Central Station through a nice 'green blew' area along the beautiful river Potmarge. The old village of Huizum is now surrounded by the town but is still a lovely oasis in the city. See
www.dorpskerkhuizum.nl, also for a historical description of the building, when events are organized, contactdata etc. Showpiece in the church are the pulpit (the only one in Friesland, north in the Netherlands, dated Pre Reformation), the great three pews and the baptismal objects from the Golden Age and the sculpted limestone tombstones. Also you will see a bronze relief from the great Dutch poet Jan Slauerhoff. His unusual long poem In Memoriam Patris was dedicated to the funeral of his father near the church. At the graveyard you will find a bier house (1875) with the function of a minimuseum for funerary heritage. For interesting stories about the church: see izitravel and click: Dorpskerk Huizum. Izitravel has also an app with that tool. During summer months always an exhibition is organized and frequently guided tours. The church is part of a heritage foundation for old churches in Friesland (
