Building built on the foundations of a medieval chapel dedicated to Saint-Mary. The present edifice dominates the great pilgrimage site to Saint Mary that was the volcanic hill of the eponymous Puy for more than eight centuries.
The church is the largest Romanesque church in Haute-Auvergne since the destruction of the abbey of Saint-Géraud d'Aurillac. The building was rebuilt in the 12th century on the site of a chapel dedicated to Saint Théodechilde.
The monastery church, built at the end of the 10th century, was destroyed in 1826 and the materials were used for the construction of the town hall. All the monastic buildings, of which only vestiges remain in constructions built after the Revolution, date back to the 11th and 12th centuries, with the exception of the cloister built in the 14th century to replace that of the 12th century.
