About this building
The church Saint-Martin de Frettemolle, which is part of the diocese of Amiens, is located on the territory of the municipality of Hescamps, in Picardy. This building, which dates from the sixteenth century, is described as a three-ship long vessel of seven spans completed by a flat chevet. It is dedicated to St. Martin, a fourth century Saint who is well known in the Somme area; he was a garrison soldier in Amiens when he shared his coat with a poor man.
The entrance, listed as a Historic Monument, is the most remarkable part of the building. It has a bay vaulted basket handle, surmounted by a tympanum and a dripstone adorned with five carved angels. Above the vaulted bay, on a console, is an unfortunately beheaded statue of Saint Martin on his horse.
The church Saint-Martin de Frettemolle has a 16th century choir nave, that was rebuilt in the seventeenth century. Both sides of the nave were rebuilt in brick in the second half of the 19th century, as well as the north side of the choir. The chevet and the south side of the choir are built of stone with brick covers. The steeple-slab porch is topped by an octagonal spire housing a bell made in 1734. Inside the church one can admire the high altar (eighteenth century), a large Christ cross, baluster benches (eighteenth century) a statue of the Virgin and Child (sixteenth century) and a statue of Saint Blaise.
