Kremikovtsi Monastery

Kremikovtsi Monastery is a 14th-century Orthodox monastery near Sofia. It is still a functioning monastery

About this building

It was built during the reign of Ivan Alexander (1333-1371). It was destroyed when the Ottoman troops took Sofia in 1382. The track of the monastery is recovered in 1493, probably the date when it was rebuilt. Like most of Bulgarian monasteries, the Kremikovtsi Monastery was a shelter for revolutionaries under the Ottoman rule.

I has two churches, the older one built in stone and a newer and larger one crowned by a dome. The oldest church preserves important 15th century frescoes.

The monastery was restored during the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s and given a new life.
