The original temple was erected in 1564. Throughout its history it was demolished by several successive earthquakes, being rebuilt and expanded until it acquired its current appearance. According to a list published by the Diocese of Angra do Heroísmo, this church was badly damaged as a result of the 1980 earthquake.
Founded in 1456, the Church of the Holy Lord Christ contains many elements of sacred art including rare paintings and religious artifacts. These include
an important collection of pieces dating from the 16th century, a rare multicolored Indo-Portuguese ivory work from the 18th century, and goldsmith pieces made by local goldsmiths.
This hermitage is shrouded in some mystery as it is unknown who its founder was and on what date it was founded, however, it is known that it already existed in 1589. In 1902, it was rebuilt and expanded, a date recorded on the façade of the Chapel. Its main images are those of São João, Santo António and Santo Amaro. It is a hermitage of great devotion in the locality where it is located, as well as throughout the island of Terceira.
