The Basilica Notre-Dame de Fourviere dominates the city of Lyon from the top of the Fourvière hill since the end of the 19th century. Its neo-Byzantine or Roman-Byzantine style architecture is the work of Pierre Bossan. Since 2014, the church is classified as a historical monument.
Saint-Jean-Baptiste-and-Saint-Etienne has the rank of cathedral and primatiale: the archbishop of Lyon has the title of Primate of Gaul. The construction of the cathedral stretches over three centuries, from 1175 to 1480. The primatiale is classified historical monument since 1862, and is a World Heritage because of its location in the historic site of Lyon.
The church of Saint-Paul, located on the right bank of the Saône, at the foot of Fourvière hill, is one of the three oldest churches in Lyon currently preserved. The district, very close to the cathedral, was for a long time a very important commercial and financial centre. When you discover it, it appears just below the Fourvière basilica. Seven of its altars were dedicated to the Virgin.
The Great Synagogue in Lyon is an Ashkenazi synagogue completed in 1864 by architect Abraham Hirsch. This Neo-Romanesque stone building still serves as a synagogue.
