About this building
The Church of Saint-Maurice is located in Saint-Maurice-La-Souterraine, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. The building dates from the late 12th to early 13th century. It is one of the characteristic Gothic buildings of Limousin. The building adjoining the church, on the south side, served as a presbytery under the old regime and was later sold as a national property.
Gothic in style, the church is made of a single, four bay nave, the last of which forms the choir with a flat chevet. The spans are vaulted with ogives that are separated by broken crossbeams. The keystones of the two bays of the nave and choir are carved. The modestly carved decoration is limited to the culottes of vaults and keystones: human figures, floral elements, a mystical lamb and a blessing hand.
Inside there are painted wooden statues of St. John the Baptist, St. Maurice and St. Michael, dated to the second half of the eighteenth century and listed in the Historical Monuments catalogue.
