Toornwerd Church
Opposite the Ewsum lock in Middelstum lies Toornwerd. Formerly a church village, it is now a hamlet. The mound where Toornwerd lay was excavated at the beginning of the 19th century.
About this building
Fire destroyed the original tower, and these remains were also cleared. The cemetery has remained intact and in 1894 it received a new stone tower in which the old clock from the previous tower was hung.
Once can visit the clock tower via a staircase that was restored in 2005 (a collaboration project of SOGK and Landschapsbeheer Groningen). The staircase section consists of three levels, built up in a vowel stone with three steps at each level.
