Church of Saint-Pierre
St. Peter's Church was built in the 14th and 15th centuries on the north wall of the old passage channel, on the site of the former Gallo-Roman port. Reshaped in the 19th century, it has kept the original flamboyant gothic portal, the south door and the choir. The church of Saint Pierre benefits from a prime location, since it is situated in the heart of the eponymous district, in Old Bordeaux, a district rich in history. Its interior is more spectacular than its massive exterior.
About this building
It is no coincidence that the church of Saint Pierre is located in the heart of Old Bordeaux, on the very site of the Gallo-Roman port. Bordeaux, a port before it was mentioned, was to honour the patron saint of those who lived off the river and made up the bulk of its population. In 1832, a magnificent bronze statue of Hercules was found under the Place Saint-Pierre, which was to decorate the entrance to the port, which was then built at the mouth of an estey, the Devèze. This large bronze of Hellenistic style, is one of the most beautiful pieces of the Museum of Aquitaine.
