Çelebi Sultan Mehmed Mosque
Also known as Bayezid Mosque it is considered the oldest mosque on European territory.
About this building
Its construction began under the rule of Sultan Bayecid I (1389–1402) and was completed by 1420. The mosque was constructed with a square base and cast stone technique. It has three doors with arabesque decoration. The upper part of the minaret was destroyed in 19912 during the First Balkan War. Its most important feature was the 15th-century wooden dome that crowned the building. Unfortunately, this one was destroyed by a fire in the course of its restoration.
It is a protected monument since 1946.
