The Franciscan monastery on Hvar is a 15th-century ecclesiastical complex overlooking the sea at the western end of the island. It consists of a Renaissance cloister and a beautiful bell tower built in the same by a local family of stonemasons. The garden of the monastery is famous for housing a 300-year-old cypress.
Hvar Cathedral was built in the 17th century on the site of an old 6th-century church, destroyed during the Turkish invasion in 1571. The reconstruction of the cathedral lasted until 1703 and gave the building a mixture of Gothic, Renaissance, Mannerist and Baroque aspects.
The Dominican Monastery in Bol was erected in 1475 very close to the small church of Our Lady of Mercy, on the site of an old castle. It has become one of the best known landmarks on the island of Brac. The Monastery Museum displays an extensive collection of objects ranging from prehistoric artefacts to underwater archaeological discoveries. But its most valuable masterpiece is the painting of Our Lady with the Child and Saints, at the altar of the church.
St. Peter's Church was probably in the 16th century, as mentioned in the construction in 1579. At the beginning of the 18th century, the church was destroyed by fire and rebuilt in 1733 in the Baroque style. The church was then enlarged until 1887.
