People's Salvation Cathedral

The People's Salvation Cathedral is a Romanian Orthodox cathedral in Bucharest. Its abysmal dimensions of the cathedral make it the largest and tallest cathedral in the world.

About this building

People's Salvation Cathedral is the tallest and largest Eastern Orthodox church building by volume in the world. It has a painted surface of 17,800 sqm. It houses the displays the largest mosaic collection in the world. The cathedral also comprises two underground galleries that serve different purposes such as the exhibition of sacred objects and the celebration of the Holy Liturgy. It is located on "Arsenal Hill", just behind the third-largest Parliament edifice in the world.

The first religious building standing in the place of the cathedral was a monastery church built in 1658. A few years after its construction, the church became the Bucharest Metropolitan Cathedral as a temporary solution until a proper cathedral could be built for the city. The church building was not sufficient to accommodate the large number of worshippers coming to mass.

The construction of the current cathedral began in 2010. The construction of the Cathedral building took eight years to complete. It was finally consecrated and inaugurated in 2018. The construction of the surrounding complex is still ongoing.
