Church of Saint Matthew Sinaitón

The Byzantine church of Saint Matthew Sinaitón or St. Matthew of the Sinaites (Agios Matthaios) was built after the earthquake of 1508. During Ottoman rule, the church was granted to the Monastery of St. Catherine of Sinai, being the only active Orthodox church in Chandax (arabic name of Heraklion). The church houses today an important collection of icons.
