The current barn church was built in the mid-18th century to replace an old barn church dating back to 1647. The barn churches were built in Gilze by the predominantly Catholic population when the main church of St. Petrus Bandenkerk was made Protestant. It was not until 1818 that the Catholics of Gilze were able to return to the St. Petrus Bandenkerk.
A single-nave cruciform church dating from around 1500, which has been extensively expanded several times, in 1880 (nave) and in 1932 under the direction of architect Wolter te Riele (1867 - 1937) the choir was rebuilt and chapels and sacristy were built for the existing church.
This church is listed as a National Monument of the Netherlands.
In 1897 the church was consecrated. In 1932 there was an additional aisopy and a new priestly choir. The font dates from 1519. From earlier chapels some wooden statues and a 17-century communion bench remain. The altars and crossings are from 1897.
