Basílica da Estrela

The Basílica da Estrela or the Royal Basilica and Convent of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus is an 18th-century basilica richly ornamented both inside and out. It is the first Christian temple dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

About this building

The basilica was commissioned by Queen Maria I of Portugal, who had promised before an image of the Sacred Heart to build a church if she was granted her wish to give birth to a heir to occupy her father's throne. The queen's tomb is located in the right transept of the basilica.

The construction began in 1779 and was completed in 1816. The building is predominantly Baroque, with notable Neoclassical influences on the façade.
