Basilica della Santa Casa is one of the most important pilgrimage sites of Christianity in Italy.
About this building
The Basilica is famous for the "Holy House" inside, which is said to be the house where the Virgin Mary was born in Nazareth. According to legend, the Holy House was brought to Loreto by the Crusaders at the end of the 13th century. The imposing sanctuary enclosing the Santa Casa was built in the mid-15th century. The ensemble is considered one of the greatest masterpieces of the Italian Renaissance.
