About this building

Buttle church is one of the churches that has best preserved its Romanesque essence. The oldest parts of the church are the chancel and the nave, which date from the 12th century.

The interior of the church features several wall paintings attributed to the Master of the Passion, a 15th-century Gotland painter whose identity remains unknown.

The rood cross dates back to the 12th century and is one of the oldest triumphal crosses on Gotland. Other interesting artefacts are the 13th-century baptismal font and the 15th-century altarpiece.
