Chapel of Notre-Dame du Verger
According to tradition, a humble sanctuary dedicated to Mary was built around the year 1000 by the ploughmen and fishermen living in the neighbouring hamlets of Cancaven and Portz Pican. Since that time, the "Chapel of the Sea" has been destroyed, but it has been rebuilt over and over again on the foundations of the previous ones. The present chapel is in fact the fourth or fifth chapel of the Orchard.
About this building
In neo-gothic style, it was built in 1868 under the direction of Canon Brune, architect of the seminary of Rennes. Inaugurated in 1869, its Virgin, surrounded by stained-glass windows dedicated to Saint Joseph and Saint John the Evangelist, offers a particularity. Indeed, contrary to the position usually adopted for other statues, the Virgin of the Orchard carries her child Jesus on her right arm.
