Chapel Saint-Jacques-et-Saint-Christophe d'Auvillers

The Chapel of Saint-Jacques and Saint-Christophe d'Auvillers is located in Neuilly-sous-Clermont. The chapel, has pre-Romanesque features, such as a single nave opening onto a flat chevet choir, that was later rebuilt in a primitive Gothic style. It is surmounted by a stone belfry with an octagonal slate spire. The chapel housed a white Carrara marble bas-relief: "The Madonna of Auvillers" by Augustine said Duccio (fifteenth century), that has now been replaced by a copy after the original was moved to the Louvre.

About this building

The Chapel of Saint-Jacques-and-Saint-Christophe d'Auvillers is located in Neuilly-sous-Clermont in the Hauts-de-France region. This 11th century building was formerly the church of the village of Auvillers until its attachment to Neuilly-sous-Clermont in 1829.

The chapel has pre-Romanesque features, such as a single nave, with Romanesque arches, that opens onto a choir with two flat chevet bays that has been rebuilt in a primitive Gothic style during the second half of the 12th century. The first span of the choir, flanked by two niches to the north and south is surmounted by a steeple of stone, topped with an octagonal arrow slate.

The chapel housed a white 15th century Carrara marble bas-relief: "The Madonna of Auvillers" by Augustine said Duccio, that has since been transported to the Louvre and replaced by a copy. There are many murals of the choir as well as the neo-Gothic stained-glass window of the chevet: in these you can see Saint Christopher and Saint James as well as the chapels dedicated to Saint James and Saint Christopher, patron of the travelers, to whom an annual mass is dedicated. The baptismal font also dates from the eleventh century. This church has a stone confessional and several wooden statues dating from the Renaissance, including that of St. James.

The church was partly built in the 13th century in a radiant Gothic style: 1250 marks the beginning of the construction of the nave; 1270 to 1280, the transept and choir as well as the right span and side chapels, and finally the transept crossing at the end of the 13th century.

Sainte-Anne d'Airion Church

Built of dressed stone, it is a small building that has been extensively altered and renovated over the centuries: the bell tower, the choir and the underside of the bell tower, vaulted in the 16th century, bear witness to this.

Church of Saint-Médard

Built on the ruins of a Romanesque church, attached to the medieval city walls, the oldest parts preserved date from around 1200. Today the church of Saint-Médard is the result of an astonishing juxtaposition of architectures, styles and periods. Inside, the church conceals several treasures including a painting by Laurent de La Hyre.
