Chrysoskalitissa Monastery

Chrysoskalitissa Monastery was built on top of a cliff overlooking the sea during the Venetian rule in Crete (1205–1669).

About this building

Chrysoskalitissa means "Golden step". This name refers to the last of the 98 steps which once led to the monastery. The catholicon is dedicated to Mother Mary and the Holy Trinity.

This monastery replaced the monastery of St. Nicholas and his church of Dormition of Mother Mary which had occupied the same site.
