The Church of All Saints Glorified (Bulgarian Memorial Chapel)

The Church of All Saints Glorified is a Bulgarian chapel built in 1882 to commemorate the victory of the Russian Empire against the Ottoman Empire in 1877-1878 and to honour the memory of the Bulgarian volunteers who took part in it.

About this building

The church is located in the Şipca Memorial Park. It was here that the Russian declaration of war against the Ottoman Empire was read in 1877 in the presence of Tsar Alexander II. The church has an octagonal shape and is inspired by Russian architecture. The icon in the centre of the chapel is said to be the only one in Moldova to help cancer patients.

The chapel had several uses in Soviet times, including office space for the staff of Chisinau's first airport. In 1969 the chapel became a Museum-Memorial and the park was built around it. Close to it, an obelisk was erected with the names of the Bulgarian volunteers who joined the war against the Ottomans in Chisinau. In the 1990s the building was again consecrated as a church and the museum ceased its activity.
