Church of the Crucifix

The Ottimati Church is an old Byzantine-Norman church built around the 10th century. The church takes its name from the former crypt of Ottimati, which was built as a support structure for the church in Normandy (12th century). Abandoned in 1767 following the suppression of the Jesuit order that occupied it, the church received the protection of Ferdinand I of Bourbon in 1780. After having been deeply damaged by the earthquakes of 1783 and 1908, the church was rebuilt in the first half of the 20th century.

The current Cathedral of Reggio Calabria was built in 1908, in the neo-Romanesque style, after having been completely destroyed by the Messina earthquake. The first church was built around 300 AD on the ruins of a Greek Apollo temple.

The San Paolo Sanctuary was built in the 20th century in imitation of the Norman style. Three artists worked on the facade, decorated with mosaics and three heavy sculpted bronze doors.
