Church of du Sacré-Cœur

This church was wanted by Cardinal Donnet in the image of the church crowning Montmartre, in the spirit of the buildings born of the military disaster and the dramatic events of 1870-1871.

About this building

Built from 1877 to 1903 by the architect Jean-Jules Mondet, an unsuccessful candidate in the Paris Sacré-Coeur competition, its style is a harmonious blend of neo-Romanesque and neo-Byzantine. Of large dimensions, it adopts a Latin cross plan, and a monumental spire at the transept crossing. A large choir leads to a reasonably sized chevet decorated with lancet berries, in a modern and colourful style.
