Church of Nossa Senhora do Carmo, Lagos
The Church of Our Lady of Carmo is a 16th-century building in Lagos, in the region of Algarve. It is also known as Igreja das Freiras (Nun's Church).
About this building
The church was founded as a monastery church in 1554 following the arrival of the Carmelite Order in Lagos. This was their second female convent. The building was severely damaged during the 1755 earthquake and was restored by the Bishop of the Algarve, Friar Lourenço of Santa Maria. It remained in function until the extinction of the religious orders in 1833.
The church was restored between 2005 and 2008. It has a single nave with a vaulted roof and a rectangular chancel, and a dome with a skylight. Inside, the gilded carved altars and the tiled panels in the sacristy are particularly noteworthy.
