Church of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios (Angra do Heroísmo)

The primitive hermitage was erected under the invocation of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, next to the houses that belonged to the descendants of Pedro Anes do Canto, a rich man mentioned by Francisco Ferreira Drumond and who, upon his death, established three bonds.

About this building

This temple was built by his son, António Pires do Canto, who also served as Provedor das Armadas. SAMPAIO (1903) reports that he was unable to specify the date of construction of this hermitage. However, he adds: "as the aforementioned António Pires do Canto took care of the mansion that his father left him in 1556 and died in 1566; it is very likely that the hermitage, which belonged to the Solar of the Canto family, (the Solar of the Provedor das Armadas) was built at that time".

Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Boa Viagem

The history of this hermitage is linked to João Vaz Corte Real who, before moving to Terceira Island, traveled to several provinces of the kingdom of Portugal in an attempt to gather workers and craftsmen to bring with him to Terceira Island. When he arrived on this island, he settled in the Captaincy of Angra, while Álvaro Martins Homem settled in the Captaincy of Praia. It is possible that this same group of sailors had come to this island after João Vaz Corte Real was already there, it is assumed that they were the ones who built this chapel with the help of the donee's Captain and several noble families who with him They came to Terceira.

Chapel of Santo Cristo do Cruzeiro

Several buildings were built around the hermitage in Hortas, some of which were rebuilt a few years ago; and in Cruzeiro, which already existed in 1556, where the current hermitage was built in 1739, with the title of Senhor Santo Cristo do Cruzeiro, as it had the same image of Christ on the carved cross, all in a single stone, which existed in the aforementioned 'Cruzeiro'.
