Church of Our Lady of the Snows

The Church of Our Lady of the Snows is the largest Marian shrine in Serbia. According to legend, on the site of the present church there was a medieval Christian place of worship dedicated to the Virgin Mary, which was demolished by the Turks in 1526, who built a mosque in its place. In 1716, with the battle of Petrovaradin, the Habsburg forces inflicted a major defeat on the Ottomans. The Church of Our Lady of the Snows was then built on the site of the battle to celebrate this victory attributed to the Virgin Mary. The present neo-gothic church was built in 1881 according to the design of the Zagreb architect Herman Bole.

Sremski Karlovci Cathedral

The construction of the Sremski Karlovci Cathedral began in 1758 at the instigation of the Metropolitan of Karlovac Pavle Nenadović, on the site of an old church from the Ottoman period. In 1760, a tower and a dome were built according to the design of Zaharije Orfelin (1726-1785), and the church was completely completed in 1762. At the end of the 18th century, the cathedral was severely damaged by a fire, and it was rebuilt for the first time in 1805. In 1811, the cathedral was renovated with important changes, which gave the church neoclassical characteristics. A century later (in 1911) it was rebuilt and given a Renaissance façade instead of a Baroque one. The church retained its appearance after this renovation.

Church of the Name of Mary

The Church of the Name of Mary is a Roman Catholic church from 1893-4. It replaces an old church from the 18th century, damaged during the Serbian uprising of 1849. The façade of this new neo-gothic church is made of yellow brick. The windows are decorated with stained glass from Peštanj, while ceramics from Žolnai cover the roof structure. The inhabitants of Novi Sad wrongly call the church a cathedral, which it is not, as the cathedral of the diocese is located in Subotica.
