Church of Panagia Kassopitra

Panagia Kassopitra is a medieval church dedicated to the patron saint of sailors.

About this building

The church stands on the site of an old temple dedicated to Zeus. The site was already a popular pilgrimage destination prior to the Christianisation of the island. Hundreds of pilgrims still arrive every year at the church which celebrates its most important day on the 15th August.

Corfu Cathedral

Corfu Cathedral was built in 1553 and renovated in 1658. The cathedral was then completely destroyed by the Germans during the Second World War on the night of September 13, 1943. The reconstruction was completed in 1970.
