Church of Saint Felix, Lezignan-Corbieres

This marvelous church is of southern Gothic style characterized by a nave without collateral, nor transept, nor ambulatory like the churches of Narbonnais. First a Carolingian church dating from the 9th century and then a Romanesque church preceded the current building. This Gothic-style church was built in the 13th and 14th centuries.

About this building

Built from a plan in Latin cross, with the chevet circled by projecting buttresses. A massive bell tower of square plan rises along the main facade, while a second turret, narrower, flanks the apse.

Fontfroide Abbey

The Cistercian Abbey of Sainte-Marie de Fontfroide dates back to the 11th century. The monastery became a key centre in the fight against Cathar doctrine, and Pope Innocent III appointed two legates chosen from among the abbey's members to defend Catholic orthodoxy against heresy.

Heptagonal Church of Saint Mary, Rieux Minervois

In addition to being the shape of a heptagon, the Church is surrounded by a circular enclosure with a vaulted ceiling making it possible to go around the building. Quarter circles serving as flying buttress on the walls of the choir. Among the treasures of the church, one can note the sculptures attributed to the Master of Cabestany and his school as well as a “Mandorle” representing the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.

Narbonne Cathedral

This cathedral is a Gothic style building built in 1272 in the heart of the city of Narbonne. Its peculiarity lies in the fact that it remains incomplete. The construction of the cathedral was one of the most ambitious projects in the kingdom of France in the 13th century.
