About this building
The Church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste is located in Luigny, in the Center-Val de Loire region. According to a charter drafted between 1100 and 1150, the church, ravaged by the many conflicts that were taking place at that time in the region, was given by Guillaume de Vichères to the monks of the abbey of Saint-Père de Chartres who immediately committed themselves to restoring it.
The early church dates from the 12th century. From this period remains the walls of the nave and the semicircular apse. The western facade, modified later, shows a basket-handle entrance underlined by an archivolt. A massive steeple of slates, pierced by shades, overhangs the roof of the building.
In the sixteenth century, the Sieur Pierre de Saint Berthevin had the church enlarged by the construction of a chapel composed of two bays. The choir, built in 1656, is one of the most beautiful baroque style ensembles. Its altarpiece is classified as an historic monument.
