The Catholic church of Saint John the Baptist was founded in the 13th century, during the Venetian era. It functioned as a mosque under Ottoman rule. Part of the building was destroyed in the bombings of Heraklion during World War II. After the war, the church resumed its activity as a Catholic place of worship.
Over the centuries, the Church of St. Titus has continually alternated between the status of mosque and church, according to the will of the successive inhabitants of the island (Saracens, Byzantines, Venetians, Ottomans and Greeks). The temple was finally consecrated as a church in 1925.
The Church of Saints Peter and Paul in Heraklion was built during the early Venetian era as the catholicon of the Monastery of the Dominican Order. It is located next to the sea wall that surrounded the city in medieval times.
Saint Mark's Basilica is a former church and mosque that currently houses the Herakleion Municipal Art Gallery, featuring Greek and foreign artists.
