About this building
The Church of Saint-Parres is located in Onjon, in the Grand Est region (Champagne-Ardenne). This picturesque 16th century building was partially destroyed by a fire in 1693 and underwent major restorative works until 1740. The church is composed of a central nave and a choir built in the place of the fourth bay, which was mostly destroyed during the fire of 1693. A 19th century sacristy leans against the cutaway of the sanctuary. The entrance consists of a door with a right lintel, separated in two parts by a trumeau, whose profiled base used to hold a statue. The lintel is decorated with small trefoil arches, flanked at their ends by two monsters holding vines that extend and develop under the arches.
A square turret, to the right of the entrance, contains the staircase that leads to the attic and as it rises, gradually takes an octagonal form. All the ribs of the vaults of the sanctuary, as well as those of the passages of the aisles, are arranged in liernes and tiercerons, while the central vault has the shape of a star with four branches. The small church of Onjon has a painted and gilded limestone statue of St. Parres and one of Saint John, a lectern, a 18th century master altar and sixteenth century baptismal fonts and stained glass.
