Church of Saint-Pierre, Lesterps

The monastery was founded at the end of the 10th century by Jordan I, lord of Chabanais. A parish was also created, served by the monks of the monastery. In 1040, the primitive church is destroyed. A new building is built by Gautier, the superior of the community, who is buried there in 1070.

About this building

The nave and the bell tower-porch, which constitutes the monumental entrance to the Romanesque building, remain today. The latter is 43 metres high. The ground floor, open on three sides, consists of three sections covered in a semicircular barrel vault. The capitals decorated with simple corner volutes evoke the sculpture of several churches in Angoumois.
