Church of St. João da Praça

The Church of San Juan de la Plaza is a church dedicated to St. John the Baptist and rebuilt in 1789 during the reign of Maria I of Portugal. It is very close to the Tagus River and the emblematic Alfama district of Lisbon.

About this building

The church is dedicated to Saint Jean Baptiste. In the past, there were at least three underground passages connecting the church with the surrounding wealthy houses, so that the residents could go to church without having to go out into the street.
