Igreja de São Miguel

The Igreja de São Miguel or Church of St Michael is located in the heart of the Alfama district, the oldest and most emblematic quarter of Lisbon. It is one of the oldest churches in the city.

About this building

The church was founded in the 12th century, but rebuilt in the 17th century by architect João Nunes Tinoco. The church reflects the Mannerist and Baroque styles of this century.

Its impressive interior is an exquisite display of art: gilded woodwork and paintings by the royal painter Bento Coelho da Silveira decorate the nave and the six chapels making it difficult to fix the eye on a single artwork.
