Convent of São Pedro de Alcântara

The Convent of São Pedro de Alcântara was built in the 17th century and houses religious paintings, tiled panels and gilded woodwork.

About this building

The convent was built with the support of António Luís de Meneses, who had promised to erect it if he prevailed in the Battle of Montes Claros in 1665. The religious complex was damaged by the earthquake of 1755, but to a lesser extent than most of the buildings in Lisbon, which were completely destroyed.

Its church displays several pieces of art which include religious paintings, tiled panels and gilded woodwork. The funerary chapel of cardinal Verissimo is another highlight of the convent, opulently decorated in marble.
