Ekeby Church

Ekeby Church is one of the 92 medieval churches on the island of Gotland.

About this building

The first Ekeby church was built in the 12th century. Only the tower remains from this period. The navel and chancel were rebuilt in the 13th century and it is possible that the tower was also extended to its current height to ensure that it would not look unbalanced.

The interior is richly decorated with wall paintings from the 13th to the 19th century. The church houses a Romanesque rood cross and a baptismal font, both from the 12th century.

Barlingbo Church

The current church was founded in c. 1280. It has three portals, two of which are in Gothic style and one, the oldest, which is still in the Romanesque tradition. There are also Gothic windows with still extant stained glass from c. 1280 in the apse and the south façade, one of only a few instances of preserved medieval stained glass in Sweden in situ.
