Notre-Dame-de-Saint-Omer Cathedral, in Saint-Omer, was built in the 11th century and it became an important artistic and interlectual center. From the 13th century onwards I twas transformed and became an exceptional gothic building, one of the most sumptuous witnesses to gothic art, in the Northern Provinces.

Its construction, begun in 1223, was only completed after several building campaigns up to the 17th century. Unique of its kind in France, Notre-Dame is probably the only church of Tudor influence in continental Europe. Its external appearance is similar to that of the cathedrals of Winchester, Rochester and Gloucester: it has neither buttresses nor buttresses, unlike most French cathedrals.

The present basilica, under the name of Notre-Dame, was built in the 19th century on the ruins of a medieval building. The building rests on one of the largest crypts in France (100 metres long and with a surface area of 1,400m²), which was laid out during the construction work on the foundations of the Romanesque crypt.

This religious building dates back to the 14th century but according to Arcisse de Caumont, it would have been largely rebuilt later. The openings were reworked in the 16th century, while the construction of the present western façade can be traced back to the 18th century thanks to an inscription dated 1766. The church remained abandoned throughout the 19th century. It is registered in the inventory of Historical Monuments in 1975 and restoration work was undertaken in the last quarter of the following century by a conservation association chaired by the mayor of the town: the frame, the roof, the paintings and pews of the time are then restored thanks to many donations and grants.

In 1285, some religious obtained permission to settle in the city. The construction of this convent and its church was carried out in part thanks to a bequest of June 2, 1361 from Guillaume André, prior of their order, and the building, which was in danger of ruin, was rebuilt in the 17th century. The first stone was laid on November 10, 1603 by Bishop Frédéric Ragueneau and the presbytery was completed in 1619.

The church is built on an ancient temple dedicated to Minerva. The site will be occupied by nuns in 1033, then there will be several periods of destruction and reconstruction. In 1060 the building is attached to the Abbey of Saint Victor. It will still be demolished during the revolution because it was used for political meetings. It was rebuilt under the July monarchy. Today only the bell tower remains, the latter was classified as a historical monument in 1964.

Bastia Cathedral

Built in 1488, cathedral in 1590, the church was completely rebuilt from 1604 to 1625 (no remains of the old building). A building with three vessels of five bays (central barrel vault, lateral vessels with ridge vaults). Walls decorated with stucco and paintings in the 18th and 19th centuries. Altars in polychrome marble. Western facade built around 1660-1670, with a baroque decoration directly inspired by the Genoese tradition. It has two levels with three pediments. Square bell tower built against the south side of the apse, completed in 1620, facade and bell tower restored at the end of the 19th century and in 1938. Consolidation of the bell support in 1940. Rehabilitation of plasters, mouldings, frescoes and wall paintings in 1955. Consolidation of the sacristy in 1961. Restoration of the west facade and bell tower in 1996-1999. Restoration of the side facades and apse in 2002-2004.
