The church is built of stone and was originally built in the 12th century. In 1818 the church's roof burned and in 1872 the tower collapsed, which is why the church was in great need of refurbishment. They then chose to have a new church built and adopted the architect AH Hugg's proposal, which resulted in a large Gothic cathedral of brick. Hugg carefully adapted the medieval nave of the old church and the Kagg burial chancel to the new church. The baptismal font in the Kaggska choir was donated in 1671 by Petrus Kyronus in memory of his first wife Anna Wudd.
