Ruşi Fortified Church

Ruşi Fortified Church

Ruși, RO

The land on which the fortified church in Ruşi was built was not very merciful to the first building erected in the Catholic time, which collapsed and was replaced by a new church in 1636. Despite many repairs, the second church also collapsed in 1780. Still the weak foundation soil, as with the well-known tower of Pisa, will bring fame to the actual church erected in 1782, whose bell tower has a tilt of 1,50 m. The hall church with square chancel and polygonal closure is home to many valuable Baroque pieces such as the 1641 altar, the 1764 canopy of the pulpit, and the 1805 organ. In 1785 Daniel Knobloch painted the railing of the gallery with Saints and the village’s coat of arms held by two men wearing traditional costumes from Ruşi.

Russian Orthodox Cathedral

Nice, FR

The cathedral, designed to meet the needs of the Russian colony, was built in 1903 by Préobrajenski, professor of architecture at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts in St Petersburg, inspired by the five-dome churches of the late 16th century in the Moscow region. The realization is made possible by the generosity of Tsar Nicholas II, who authorized the construction of the villa Bermond, his personal property, in the park. The domes of the cathedral, consecrated on December 18, 1912, are made of reinforced concrete. The iconostasis and several icons are the work of the painter Leonid Pianovsky. Restoration work was carried out on the roofs and facades of the cathedral between 1989 and 1992. Near the cathedral, a chapel commemorating Tsarévitch Nicholas Alexandrovich, who died of tuberculosis in 1865, was built in Byzantine style from 1867 to 1868.

The colourful roofs with the large hexagonal rider and the smaller onion-shaped tower make the church a real icon.
