The present cathedral is the former abbey church of the abbey of Saint-Vaast (whose origins date back to the 7th century). In the Middle Ages, Arras was the largest and richest city of Artois. It was built in the 18th century as the abbey church of Saint-Vaast Abbey and became a cathedral in 1848, replacing the old cathedral Notre-Dame-en-Cité d'Arras, the great Gothic cathedral in the west of the old town that had been destroyed during the French Revolution.

Notre Dame is one of the most eminent churches in the world, and the symbol of the city of Paris. It has become the theatre to some of the most notorious novels in literature, celebrated by writers and artists including Victor Hugo. The cathedral was built by the meanderings of the river Seine- in the Île de la Cité- in the early days of the gothic era. Although the monument is a great example of early gothic style, the influence of the Romanesque school is still visible. In 2019, the church was badly damaged by a fire.

The construction of the building began on the initiative of Bishop Evrard de Fouilloy (1211-1222), and under the direction of the project manager Robert de Luzarches. The work began with the elevation of the nave and gates in 1220, then the choir in the 1240s. The radiant chapels were completed in 1258 and the choir in 1269. The two south and north towers were completed in 1366 and 1402 respectively.
