The Hajji Bendo Mosque is one of the works of Ottoman architecture in Albania, built in the 18th century during the reign of Ali Pasha (1788-1822). The mosque was damaged during the communist period. Its dome, once made of red brick, is now covered with concrete. The Muslim frescoes and murals in the mosque are in danger of disappearing. Half of its stone minaret has disappeared.
Built in the 15th century, the mosque is famous for its acoustic quality thanks to the casks that are diliberately calculated in the holes on the walls.
Also known as Memi Bey Mosque, it is located in the old bazaar of the neighborhood, hence the nickname. It is the only one out of city's thirteen mosques suevived from demolition.
The mosque was largely destroyed during the communist period and was converted to residential house and remains like that until today.
