Hervormde Church

The church is very suitable as a place to meet, because the building no longer has pews and it is nicely situated. The main attraction is the beautiful stained glass.

About this building

The church of Schurega stands on the edge of a forest, halfway between Jubbega and Oldeberkoop. The church is somewhat hidden, and is accessible via a sandy path from the main road between Nieuwehorne and Donkerbroek. In 1579 a new communal church was built here, about the same time as the separation of Jubbega and Schurega. That church was replaced in 1715 by the simple hall church that still stands today. A memorial stone in the west façade shows the coat of arms of the Scheltinga family. In 1910 there was a belfry next to the church, but it disappeared. Instead, a roof turret was installed on the west facade, with a slender steeple. In the church there is a melodious cabinet organ from Ter Idzard. The Local Commission that manages the church of Schurega is particularly active. Concert and exhibitions take place regularly. Furthermore, the church is often rented for mourning and wedding services. The church is fully equipped. Because no pews are present, the building is particularly suitable for meetings and other meetings. In October 2009 a symposium of the Province of Frysin took place about keeping sheep in nature reserves.
