Holy Asomaton Monastery

The Holy Asomaton Monastery (Moni Asomaton) is a former monastic complex that operated from the second Byzantine period until the 19th century.

About this building

The monastery was originally founded in the 10th–11th centuries. It would be completely destroyed under Ottoman rule and rebuilt. Religious activity ceased in the 19th century. In the 20th century, an Agricultural School began to operate in the buildings of the former monastery.

The only active place of worship is the catholicon, which has been restored and holds ceremonies occasionally. Some ruined buildings can be seen around the church. The historical artefacts recovered from the monastery are housed in the Historical Museum of Heraklion.
