Ioannina island monasteries, Lake Pamvotis
On the shore of Lake Pamvotis, the prosperity of the city of Ioannina grew as Constantinople started to decline in the 13th century. From this period, the nearby Ioannina island becomes an important monastic site, later respected by the Ottomans that invaded the territory in the 15th century. The occupants finish however to invade the island and destruct its buildings when the renegade Ali Pasha finds refuge there in 1822. Today, no less than seven monasteries can be found on the island.
