Jesuit College and Church

The Jesuit College and Church (Igreja do Colégio dos Jesuitas) is a former Jesuit college dating from the 17th century.

About this building

The church has typical elements of Jesuit architecture from the time it was built.  It has a single nave with a cradle vault, a triple apse and six side chapels with tribunes above. The façade was designed by João Nunes Tinoco. It had to be partially rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake.

After the expulsion of the Jesuits from Portugal in 1759 the church was given to the University of Coimbra and later to the Order of Camillus de Lellis.
