Church Garnwerd
On top of the mound of the old village 'Granawurth' lies this late Roman hall church. On the west side the church has a large, 18th century saddle roof tower that replaced an older tower.
About this building
The east side is closed by a five-sided choir. There is another original window in the south wall.
Inside the church an early 18th century pulpit is surrounded by a simple baptismal font. The gentleman's bank with rococo decorations comes from the late 18th century.
Garnwerd has been a stage for concerts, poet's nights, theater performances and exhibitions, organized by the Te Gast in Garnwerd foundation for 30 years. This festival takes place not only in the church, but also in the living rooms around the church. Transformed into small concert halls, they become the setting for a number of intimate performances. The patron Saint is Saint Ludger, an 8th century missionary who hailed from Frisia, and was the first Bishop of Munster. The organ was built in 1809 by Lambertus van Dam and 1867 three statues, symbolizing faith, hope and love, were added. They were made by S. van Lekkum.
