Nieuw Scheemda Church

After the reclamation of a part of the Dollard, a settlement was established in 1659, which was designated as Scheemderhamrik. A newly formed reformed municipality split from Scheemda. New Scheemda was born and immediately started building a church. This was completed in 1661 and provided with a real clockwork; the dial is in the 'dakkapel'.

About this building

The interior, with its beamed ceiling, is simple and harmonious. The entire space, including the staircase, dates from the construction period. Beside the pulpit standing against the east wall, an old whip hangs to chase away dogs from the church. There are no more weekly services in the church, only at Christmas and sometimes on special occasions. An organ was added shortly after construction, in 1695, according to the notes of the builder Schnitger. The current organ is the same one, but has been repaired several times.
