Opwierde Church
The church of Opwierde probably dates to the 13th century. It is located on a mound, almost enclosed by Appingedam. It is a remarkable building, with facades that are divided into two zones and niches decorated with wickerwork.
About this building
The interior was originally covered with vaults but later, a blue beam-soldering replaced them. Rather uniquely, the interior has a sandstone knowledge sacrament that was spared during the 'iconoclasm' in the 16th century. Until 1888 a wooden open belfry was standing in the cemetery and in 1910 the roof turret was placed on the roof, which also has a clock that was originally cast in 1489 and then re-cast in 1903.
In 2008, the church of Opwierde became the new rehearsal room of the Christian Music Society. The musicians found the church to be an ideal venue to rehearse and to give concerts.
