Maria Church
The church of Bornwird dates from the thirteenth century. The large-format brick church has no tower and no choir anymore. During the restoration in 1987, a mural of St. Christopher was discovered.
About this building
To the north of Raard is an old, largely excavated mound and, surrounded by only a few farms and houses, the church of Bornwird, made from large sized bricks. In the past this church had a semi-closed choir but now has a straight, closed east wall. The church has also lost its tower. Where the tower stood is now a roof turret on the west facade with a clock from 1653, cast by Eppe van den Arck. The roof of the church is partially covered with monks and nuns (hollow and convex roof tiles). The northern entrance is decorated with a swollen neck wall that was added in 1751, that originates from the former presbytery at Hiaure and has a Frisian inscription. The church is managed by the Local Commission Foudgum / Bornwird and can be rented for groups up to 50 people for events such as receptions, family gatherings, meetings or small concerts.
